My second police lineup, this time it's some of my heroes.
Left to right:
Spaceman Spiff
From Calvin and Hobbes, one of Calvin’s many personas and my favourite as you might guess from my avatar and deviantart ID…
I really enjoyed drawing him and it gave me enough confidence to think I might be able to tackle Calvin and Hobbes next, so keep your eyes open!
Wedge Antilles
I’m not sure how well known Wedge is to casual Star Wars fans, as he only appears in a couple of scenes in each film, in A New Hope he helps take out the Death Star, in Empire Strikes Back he helps to evacuate Echo Base, taking down the big walker thingies and finally in Return of the Jedi he takes out the second Death Star. He’s one of those characters that fans seem to love, like Boba Fett, although he barely has any lines… personally I’ve never understood the love of Fett, all he does is fly around a bit then get thrown into the Sarlaac by a blind man… screaming like a girl in the process.
Reading the Star Wars novels in the post Return of the Jedi era I liked Wedge even more. It always irked me that they praised Luke Skywalker so much more than Wedge… Skywalker is a sissy girl who had the Force to assist him, Wedge did it by skill!
Anyway I based this pose off a picture I found in one of my Star Wars books. I am pretty happy with it.
Elwood Blues
“We’re a hundred and six miles from Chicago, we’ve got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.”
The Blues Brothers is one of my favourite films, I’ve enjoyed dressing as a Blues brother on occasion… often dragging a friend along to be my “brother”. Dan Aykroyd is a funny chap, for me Elwood Blues and Ray Stanz (from Ghostbusters) are two of his best characters. Elwood is probably his most recognised, I like my drawing of him, though it was a little rushed as I wanted to finish this piece.
James Tiberius Kirk
Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise, NCC 1701. Yes, I am a Trekkie! I admit it! At least I was a Trekkie… I’ve grown off it since Enterprise and Nemesis.
I am hanging out for the original series to be released on dvd, I still haven’t seen the entire series… and I can’t wait. There’s something about Star Trek TOS that doesn’t date it for me… sure they have hokey sets and pretty average special effects, but it’s the characters I love. Kirk is like the James Bond of outer space, and the way Shatner acted him, the halting… WAY… of SPEAKING that is so often mocked is something I think most trekkies have grown to really love. And the way he fought! Yeah! He was a man of action, none of that diplomatic crap that Picard later employed, nope, no one fought like Kirk!
I’m still pissed at the way they killed him. Blasphemy! I reckon Shatner got the last laugh with his novel The Return which I reckon would’ve made a great film. Oh well.
Plus Shatner was never above mocking himself, good on him.
The hair on this picture is a little off, but the heroic pose and smug smile is right on I think
Doctor Abraham Van Helsing
“Hey, he doesn’t look like Hugh Jackman! And his name is Gabriel!”
If I get one comment along those lines, I swear I will hunt you down and kill you. It annoys the Hell out of me that kids are going to associate the name “Van Helsing” with that pretty average film from now on.
For the ill informed, Abraham Van Helsing was the main vampire hunter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. He was an older fellow, a doctor, a professor, an instructor, not some 19th century James Bond mercenary for the Catholic Church!
Sorry…
This version is based on Anthony Hopkins’ version of him in Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula which was a very enjoyable film. I loved the insanity Hopkins brought to the role… I liked Van Helsing in the book, but it is Hopkin’s potrayal that sticks in my mind.
I based this picture on a image I found from the movie, it doesn’t look like Hopkins, but the pose and the clothing is pretty close.
Oh, and those three heads he’s holding are the brides of Dracula.
Ohoooo... man... Look at all those head on Dr. Van Helsing!! MG: Hey, but the rest of the heroes look good!!! Hm, there's ohnly Elwood... where's his partner, Jake?

Woo! Kudos for your version of Anthony Hopkins' Van Helsing. (His name is *not* Gabriel!) Very cool idea. I should do this (I'm still working on my 'study of the artist' thing, though. ).

I pondered whether to put both Blues Brothers, but thought Elwood would be a good enough representation, besides he was my favourite
